Thank you for your interest in my art and books! These are a few of my Frequently Asked Questions, please read before reaching out.
Q: How did you become an author/illustrator? How did you get a book deal?
Q: Can you illustrate my book?
A: When your book gets bought by publishing house, they will assign an illustrator to your manuscript themselves. If you still would like me to illustrate your book once it is bought, you may suggest me to your publisher. I am not taking on self-published projects and I don’t have other artist recommendations at this time.
Q: Can you collaborate with me on my graphic novel/anthology/book?
A: For all serious inquiries on publishing, please contact my agent Minju Chang at BookStop Literary Agency.
Q: Can you read my manuscript and give me advice?
A: I don’t feel that I am in the position to help with that right now. There are great groups like Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators who have local chapters with peer review groups and I recommend checking them out.
Q: I am an aspiring artist/writer, how do I pick the best major to get into animation/children’s books?
A: The cool thing about the arts is that you don’t have to have any particular degree (or even a degree at all) to become a professional in them. While I personally think a college degree helps you out in ways like learning how to take critique and finding your voice, the exact major does not usually matter. There are children’s book writers who majored in math and science and animation artists who majored in industrial design. Focus on what interests you and never stop growing your skills and ideas!
Q: I have a cool organization/app/website that I think your work will fit into, will you do this project pro-bono for us?
A: I absolutely love making art for worthy causes, however, I believe all artists should be compensated for their time (like any other professional). If you want to know more about why I do not work for free, you can see more here. I do indeed take pro bono projects, but at this time I am working with a set few nonprofits. If you are interested in working with me, send me an email with your intended budget.
Q: I cannot pay you for your time, will you do it for exposure or a cut of the profits later?
A: I don’t do work for free or for exposure. Like you, I have bills to pay and like to feed myself. If your budget changes please feel free to contact me.
Q: Will you come speak at our school/event?
A: If it fits in with my schedule, I would love to hear about your event. Before reaching out about a school visit, please see my school visit section for details.
Q: Can you give me a discount to your online shop?
A: My shop is through Society6 and I do not make the discounts that they run on their website, so I have no way to give you a discount. But! Society6 runs sales regularly so maybe just wait and check back tomorrow.
