I am excited to share the news that my second graphic novel, Exposures, will be published with First Second, an imprint of Macmillan! My amazing editor, Emily Feinberg, acquired the rights to Exposures and my incredible agent, Minju Chang (BookStop Literary Agency), negotiated the deal for world rights.
Exposures is a fictional middle-grade graphic novel about a 12-year-old girl with OCD and how she confronts her worst fears in Exposure Therapy, learning to live with uncertainty. I came up with the idea of Exposures during one of my own OCD therapy sessions with my behavioral therapist. I stopped what we were doing and wrote down the idea. Then, I twiddled about with it off and on for two years until suddenly the whole thing hit me head on and I was able to knock out the pitch in two weeks. You never know where your ideas will come from, but let them take their time!
EXPExposures will come out in 2022… which is so far away (I know)! For now, look forward to GOWITH THE FLOW (my first graphic novel with First Second, co-authored with Karen Schneemann) coming out in January 2020. Hopefully, I will have a cover to show you soon…
People say that when you write books for kids, you tend to write what you needed as a kid. As a kid with OCD, this book would have been so important to me. As an adult with OCD, I hope to be able to write the story I needed.
If you are looking for resources on OCD, I have a few on my website HERE.
